DIY: How to upholster a chair

One of the best ways to restore an old chair is to the reupholster the seat. Often the frame of the chair is in perfect condition but the cushion has been worn in. This was the case with this chair. While the frame was sturdy, the seat had sunken in and was in need of a makeover. The foam inside the cushion had deteriorated and the fabric was worn out and tattered. Once the seat had been reupholstered, the chair was as good as new!

Once the cushion was removed from the frame of the chair, the existing fabric was removed using a hammer and screw driver to release the staples. A new cushion was put in place using foam and wadding then the cushion was reupholstered in a brand new customised fabric. The cushion was then attached back onto the frame and the chair was given new life. (Refer to page the next post for a step-to-step diy for this these techniques and project.)

Today we bring you a step-to-step guide on how to upholster a chair with a cushion seat..

Anonymous asked: Hi Made By Me, just wondering if you can share with us a good video for reupholstering a chair?

This is a great video for a simple upholstery job with a basic single cushion chair: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLE1iFeddsA

However, if you are after something a little bit more complex that has more than one cushion for example an armchair, try this link. It comes in 3 chapters as the steps are more detailed and are very useful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWyZEbNAnmU

The great thing about DIY videos is that you can follow each step as you complete the process and pause/start it to go according to your own pace!

Need one large mirror but don’t have one? Why not use several smaller mirrors - it achieves the same effect but looks far more interesting and allows you to add different textures and colours to your room!

Last week we posted a step-to-step DIY guide on how to create an upholstered bed head. The great thing about the techniques we showed you is that they can be applied to any similar piece of furniture! Why not try an upholstered board to pin jewellery or precious items? It’s cute, practical AND a unique feature piece for your room!

About:

Everyone has the ability to be creative, yet not everyone can see that. If you were to ask a group of children who can draw, they will all enthusiastically raise their hand. If you were to ask the same question to a group of adults, sadly few hands are raised. We believe that if we are able to instill the value of handcrafted items and self creativity into individuals, we can change the view toward mass consumption and the ‘throw away’ society that we live in. No longer are hand crafted items or individual talents valued, instead we buy to be trendy. We aim to make you aware that you can still be trendy and unique through the idea of creativity and learning to value something you have poured your heart and sole into. We provide you with the skills to bring back the creative child within you. As Picasso said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

By being involved in our program, Made By Me, one person alone can reduce their eco-footprint by reducing their contribution to landfill, learn to revalue objects as more than throw away items, and is able produce a beautiful one off piece to furnish their home or give as a present.

Our aim is to create awareness and educate students about the potentials and possibilities of designing from recycled goods instead of from raw materials. Our course thrives on individual creativity and aims to solve the problem of the continuous cycle of disposing goods by involving the user in the process of making a product, encouraging DIY practices and instilling value and sentiment into the end product. In doing this, we hope to create a new relationship between the user and the object and create a change to our wasteful habits.

So join us a we share interesting DIY projects, tips/techniques and inspiration with you daily. Be inspired by our DIY projects and inspiration images and get creative!
